Successful negotiation takes careful preparation and planning.

When you have completed your preparations, you should enter into negotiations with a position that you feel will gain you the most favourable outcome.

If you are opening negotiations with a counter-offer, you should always be prepared to make a concession if one is requested.

Never make threats or ultimatums during a negotiation, but consider using the strategy of 'walk away'.

Smart negotiators avoid traps that can lead to failure by recognising the difference between interests, positions and issues.
